Trekking Through Mud to See Cave Graves in Tana Toraja

Indonesia is Beautiful Country. Indonesia is a Country in Southeast Asia and Oceania.Indonesia consists of 17,508 islands, about 6,000 of which are inhabited.

In Rantepao, on the island of Sulawesi, the Torajan people are famous for their elaborate 3-day burial ceremonies. If your visit doesn’t coincide with a ceremony or if your stomach prefers to pass on the sight of pig and buffalo slaughtering, it’s worth the trek to instead visit the tombs built into the town’s rocky hills. Across the Sa’dan River, rice paddies make a scenic threshold for these cave graves but test your balance as you cross their narrow ledges. A trudge through feet-engulfing sludge follows, and little village girls are on hand to rescue your swallowed shoes. Skulls and bones are littered around the rock’s face and older coffins lay abandoned. Looking up, faces look back at you: tau taus, effigies of the dead, stand guard in front of their remains. Once the goosebumps subside, you can admire the architecture, ingenuity and tradition the Torajans are famous for.
